Our Extended Shanghainese Family

An essential key in preparing for our move to Shanghai was learning the Mandarin language. Finding the right teacher was just as important. We were so fortunate to have been paired up with “Li Laoshi” as our Mandarin and cultural instructor. For weeks leading up to our move, Li Laoshi came to our home three days a week, 3-5 hours each time. Not only is she a talented instructor, she is also Shanghainese. From Li, we were able to gain three vital gifts: a solid foundation in Mandarin, in-depth cultural insight into the Shanghai world, and a Shanghainese extended family.

Last weekend, we were invited to spend the day with Li’s parents at there home in Shanghai. I cannot express how welcome they made us feel, how delicious the food was, and how much food we were served. It was their first time having Americans at their home, and it was our first experience in a local Shanghainese home.

Ganbei! We look forward to many more visits with the Li’s
