Fall in Shanghai is beautiful. Abundant days with blue skies, unseasonably warm (for us) weather, and good air. We’ve enjoyed celebrating “expat” holidays, sharing our city with visitors, and spending time with great friends.
Halloween in Shanghai: Our neighborhood is one of the busiest trick-or-treat locations in JinQiao. Regardless of the scheduled 6-7pm time slot, traffic was steady from 5 until 9pm. In a culture that doesn’t celebrate the ghoulish holiday, we had plenty of first-time trick-or-treaters…as well as a few “treat-or-trick”ers.
We’ve loved sharing Shanghai with visitors:
We were lucky enough to host great friends from Smucker’s; Denny and Lynn Armstrong. They got to experience our life as an expat family and discover the real Shanghai, while we were granted a little taste of home and truly enjoyed their company.
While Denny and Lynn were here, Steve Oakland was able to make a work-related visit.
A special visit from Tim Smucker included mexican food (yes, mexican), visiting a local grocery store, and making jelly sandwiches (of course!).

Luke now asks, “Mom, can I have more of Mr.Smucker’s jelly? Please…his grandpa made it. Now he makes it.”
A Weekend Workout Retreat in Phuket, Thailand. Rigorous workouts, endless Thai cuisine, and daily Thai massages. Thanks to John, I was able to escape Shanghai and join in this fun. An awesome experience with amazing friends!
Truthfully, we worked our tails off for days…but we did end the trip on a yacht which took us to a private island. What?!
Thanksgiving in Shanghai: We are so blessed in many ways. This year, we hosted Thanksgiving with some of our closest Shanghai friends and “Shanghai Family.” The day included school for the kids, a $150 pre-cooked/pre-ordered 20lb. turkey from a local butcher that imports meat, and great friendships.
Dulwich Football Club: Our weekends have included many hours playing “football.” Jack, Kate, and Luke have improved tremendously while making great friendships along the way.
Kate spent countless hours preparing to be a Sorcerer for her first stage production, Shakespeare Rocks!
Along with the other Fall excitement, Luke is R-E-A-D-I-N-G !
