It’s been an incredible journey living on this side of the world. As our containers are sailing the sea to America, we are savoring every last experience in Shanghai. We’ve become ultra-aware of our surroundings, knowing this may be our last xiaolongbao, night on the bund, or meal with that dear friend. Some things are easier to say goodbye to (like the pollution or squatty potty), but we have come to make this our home and everything and everyone here is what makes this place so unique and exciting. It’s a strange feeling living in limbo between two worlds that are so different, and yet both so significant in shaping who we are.
On the cusp of our repatriation, we were fortunate enough to welcome our final visitor, Dan. His visit not only brought the comfort of home, but it also forced us to re-discover the Shanghai we love one last time. We were not only given the gift of his visit, but a reminder of the infinite reasons this city will leave its mark on our hearts forever.
The Culture:
Together, we wandered behind the walls of Shanghai’s disappearing neighborhoods and savored the beauty and peace found behind temple doors.

One of the most important neighborhoods to me and my recent work, Xicheng Li.

My absolute favorite, Longhua Temple. After bargaining our way in as it closed, we soaked in every minute of the serene, vacant space.
A city full of energy and potential:
The unprecedented growth and expansion happening within Shanghai is not only visible in its dramatic skyline. The art community is also flourishing and gaining important international relevance.

His visit also came on the eve of the exhibition presenting my recent work created throughout the past two years in Shanghai. Sharing this art world and the disappearing communities influential to my work with Dan was a beautiful gift.

A city that truly never sleeps:
Both figuratively and literally. Around every corner is a new experience. After more than three years, we are still discovering new adventures within this mega-city. On our list of things to do before we depart was a sidecar tour through the bustling night streets of Shanghai. The juxtaposition of the old alongside the new becomes more apparent after the lights are turned on.

Here’s to the city full of surprises, beauty, and grit. Thank you for sharing it with us, Dan.

To the Beach.
I can’t believe your time is nearly over in Shanghai – what a mix of emotions you all must be going through! Safe travels and we look forward to seeing you in Hudson!
